Montana Department of Justice
Attorney General Steve Bullock
The Montana Department of Justice has received three grants from Recovery Act funding.
Crime Victims Compensation Grant
The Recovery Act of 2009 includes a direct appropriation of $100 million in grant funding to be administered by the Office for Victims of Crime to assist crime victims with expenses incurred as the result of a crime. The Montana Crime Victim Compensation Program (CVC) has been awarded $90,582 from the Office of Victims of Crime for funding under the FY09 Recovery Act. The funds are in addition to the regular VOCA funds the program receives each year. The funds will be used to provide benefits to victims for medical, mental health counseling, loss of wages and funeral expenses.
Recovery Act funds will be disbursed by the CVC by the end of September, 2009.
Prescription Drug Diversion Unit
The Division of Criminal Investigation has received $1,230,902 to create a new Drug Diversion Unit. The Recovery Act funds were awarded through Rural Law Enforcement Assistance: Combating Rural Crime, under the Office of Justice Programs (OJP).
The department will use these funds to hire six individuals who will focus specifically on addressing the rise in the abuse and misuse of prescription drugs across the state. The Drug Diversion Unit will consist of:
- three drug diversion investigators,
- an education outreach coordinator,
- an assistant attorney general to prosecute related criminal cases, and
- an administrative assistant.
Through this unit, the department will expand drug diversion investigations, provide community education, and increase drug diversion prosecutions.
The funds will be dispersed by the Division of Criminal Investigation during the allotted two-year grant period.
Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign
The Montana Board of Crime Control has approved a one-time direct award of Recovery Act, Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program funding to the Montana Department of Justice. The $100,000 award to the Division of Criminal Investigation will be used to develop a public education campaign concerning the abuse of prescription drugs throughout the state.
The funds will be dispersed by the Division of Criminal Investigation during the 2009/2010 fiscal year.
